What Are You Proud Of?

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

I’ve told you before about our staff WhatsApp chat and how great it is, but recently, something happened in the chat that elevated it to new levels.

I’m not going to say who, but one member of the team proposed an exercise where we would all name 5 things that we are proud of ourselves for. These could be things from any point in our lives, no matter how big or small.

It seemed cheesy at first and WOW was it harder than I thought it was going to be, but we all did it and listed at least 5 things that fit the criteria. As the relatively new guy in the office, I learned some things about my colleagues that I didn’t know before, and even for those that have worked together a while, there were probably some bits that they didn’t know either.

We spend so much of our lives giving friends and family compliments and telling others how proud we are of them, that it’s difficult to turn that back on ourselves – at least in my case.

I would highly recommend giving this a go with your friends/colleagues/on your own. Get a pen and paper, or jot it down in your phone, but give yourself some time to come up with 5 things you are proud of yourself for.

The point of this exercise is fairly obvious.  It’s meant to convince people to appreciate themselves and be proud of who they are – something which we clearly don’t do a lot of, as it did get a bit emotional in the chat.

I feel like this is a great exercise to bring us closer together as a team, but also, to make us stronger as individuals.

I used to struggle with self-esteem and still do in a way, and I will always remember one of the greatest bits of advice I ever received from a friend: “When someone pays you a compliment, thank them!”  Even if you don’t believe them, saying thanks is first, the polite thing to do, but secondly, it is an acknowledgment that you have heard the compliment. If you dismiss the compliment, you are more likely to ignore it and forget it.

My two bits of advice to you today;

  1. Do this exercise and list 5 things you are proud of yourself for.

  2. From now on, if someone compliments you, thank them!
