The Real Family

I talk a lot about “The Family” within the office, but on 6th November 2022, something amazing happened within the Smith family. The REAL family.

My brother and sister-in-law were incredibly happy to welcome Taylor Hugo Smith into the world. An adorable little bundle of joy, with an excellent choice in uncles. His hobbies include crying, screeching, screaming, wailing, weeping, bawling, howling, and occasionally sleeping.

I’ve never been much of a broody person, but for the first time in my life, throughout my sister-in-law’s pregnancy, I could feel the excitement growing and really starting looking forward to the prospect of being an uncle.

On Friday 11th, I drove for an hour and a half, to visit the sleep deprived new parents and meet Tyler for the first time. It’s hard to describe the level of happiness at seeing your very first nephew. I know it’s something that MANY other people in this world have experienced, but until you experience it for yourself, you’ll probably never fully understand.

I held him for an hour or so and couldn’t help but look down, smile and laugh. Not because he was doing anything particularly entertaining (he was asleep for 99% of the time), but just because I was enamoured with this tiny, cute, human being that my brother and sister-in-law had created.

Like most new parents, they’ve read the books, they’ve attended the classes, but still feel as unprepared as most do and are still not sure whether they’re doing it “the right way”.

Just to add to the stresses of looking after a new born, they’re still awaiting completion of their new build property, which is due any day now. I’m sure it’s going to be a lot of fun moving from their current, temporary accommodation into a partially finished development of houses, whilst juggling (figuratively, not literally) the new born.

My dual role as both uncle and mortgage advisor means that I will inevitably be giving them a hand with moving in and it goes without saying that Tyler’s first Christmas in their new home is going to be a special one for the entire family.
