Fitting in With the Family (Part 2)

As I sit here and write this, I have Blue the office dog sat on my lap, lapping up the attention. It’s well known that dogs are a good judge of character, so I feel safe that I have managed to integrate myself fairly well into this family.

I have worked in offices before where colleagues work well together and are friendly, but coming into this office, it felt like they had all worked as one strong unit for the past 20 years. Most employees tend to keep their work and personal lives separate, whereas the ROK/RBM group have a Whatsapp chat where we continue our friendly banter outside of office hours.

We’re all very open and honest with each other and my new family probably know more about me than some of my friends outside of work do! Everyone has been so welcoming and as I alluded to in the first “Fitting in With the Family” blog, it’s heart-warming to see how they treat each other, and now me!

I’m sure (as with any family) there are certain things that annoy them about me – almost certainly my inability to stop fidgeting and/or clicking pens - but I’m hoping that I provide enough positivity that they’re still willing to keep me around. If you didn’t know about my pen clicking habit here it is >>> https://rokmarsh.com/blog/oli-can-you-please-stop-clicking-that-pen <<<

A lot of families will have instances where they can almost read each other’s minds, and this one is no different. There have been many instances of one of us asking the first half of a question and it will be answered in full by another member of the team.

When Ash asks for “a surprise” from Tesco’s and I bring him back some chicken satay, I get to see his eyes light up like it’s Christmas. When Chelsea arrives at the office in the morning, Aleah is there offering the hug she needs. Best of all, everyone is very quickly cottoning on not to ask if I would like a coffee, they just make me one! The answer is always a yes!

Everyone has good days and bad days, but I know that if anyone in this office is having a bad day, we’ll all be here to support each other through anything. That’s part of what it means to be a family.

They say that you can’t choose your family, but in this instance, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to.
